The Apollo Youth Club is a voluntary organization and a registered charity. set up in February 1971 by a group of young black people living, studying and working in Reading. Its activities are open to the whole community.
Since it was set up the club has been based in temporary accommodation, ranging from school halls to renting rooms in community centres. There was a lengthy search for permanent premises and in early 1982 the committee identified the Old School building in Silver Street as a possible solution. With support from the local council and the community the Old British School building became Apollo's permanent home in late 1983.

From the outset, Apollo has focused on educational and cultural activities. These included:

A grant from the local authority helped with the running cost of the building, however, all the activities were planned and carried out by volunteers from the community.
The Apollo committee would like to thank the parents, children and staff from After School Club, Homework Club and Saturday Club for their support.
Thanks also to supporters and volunteers and to everyone else who have contributed in the past and those who will contribute in the future to the growth and development of the Apollo club.
