MULTI-CULTURAL CURRICULUM

The Mary Seacole Day Nursery aims to provide a happy and stimulating environment where each child’s culture is acknowledged and appreciated. Each week you will see displayed in the room play opportunities.

The learning programme that is used with the babies and toddlers aged 3 months to 3 years is "Birth to Three Matters...". This is a learning structure that nurseries are encouraged to use and it encourages the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of your child while s/he is with us.

Within each area of learning, there are a number of components, which we as a team plan and provide opportunities and activities to help your child develop some key developmental skills.

The four areas of this learning framework and their components are:

		Making meaning

		Keeping safe
		Healthy choices

The Mary Seacole Day Nursery aims to provide a happy and stimulating environment where each child’s culture is acknowledged and appreciated. Each child’s ability is assessed this allows the staff to implement a learning program that is best suited to the child.

Developmental Aims:

1. Physical - focusing on the development of fine and gross motor skills
2. Intellectual - focusing on language development, concentration span, development of spatial concepts, covering all areas of cognitive development
3. Creativity - focusing on the development of the child’s ability to create a representation of their world.
4. Emotional - focusing on developing each child’s we will ensure that each child develops his or her sense of belonging and encourage self-acceptance and self-esteem.
5. Social - to allow a child to develop social skills that will aid them to fit into their own social group and society at large.
6. Cultural Development - to allow a child to develop a basic understanding of varied cultures represented within our community through, for example, topics on various cultures, food, dress, language, play, stories and religion.

Children at the age of 3-5 years take part in a integrated educational program which focuses primarily on the six Early Learning Goals:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Language and Literacy
Mathematics
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
Physical Development
Creative Development

Between the hours of 1.30 - 3 p.m. the early learning goals are covered specifically as follows:

Monday-Language
Tuesday-Maths
Wednesday-Drama
Thursday-Creativity
Friday-Knowledge and Understanding.

These goals are not just designated to the afternoon but are integrated throughout the nursery Curriculum.
